accolades for sale

so i'm shopping for dresses online instead of working when my phone rings. it's a representative from the cambridge who's who for executives and professionals or something like that. anyway, she tells me that i've been selected to have my bio placed in this most prestigious publication. i'll be listed among people who work in fortune 500 companies and it'll be a great networking opportunity for me. i'm thinking hey, cool.

she proceeds to ask me all these questions about my education, goals, other interests and involvement in community, etc. i almost feel like i'm being interviewed by a prospective mother-in-law or something. anyway after all that i'm officially extended an invitation to be listed in the who's who. i will receive an engraved plaque, a copy of the publication on CD rom, two round trip tickets to anywhere in the continental u.s., a lifetime membership to the cambridge society and recognition and the grand feeling knowing that my name will appear next to folks in the fortune 5. all for the awesome price of $798.00!

yeah. you know what i'm thinking. how in the hell do you call and tell me i'm noteworthy, but only if i paid for you to say so? anyway, i tell her no thanks. i work for a NON-PROFIT organization and i don't think they'll take kindly to my asking them to pay for such an honor. now being the salesperson that she is, the price is all of a sudden lowered to $599, but that will only be for five years. No. "ok. I still want you to be a part of this prestigious publication. for $199 you can have a 2 yr membership." NO. "alright, i can see that budget is an issue, what about a year's membership for $99, but you'll not receive the plaque or the tickets." NO!!!!! "well, you can list your name for free and purchase the plaque for $69." but i have to give a credit card number right then and there.

ok. now i'm insulted because apparently my stature can be bargained down like a blue light special at k-mart. no thanks. but you know, they may be on to something. maybe i should start charging my family and friends for accolades from me! for $500 even, they'll get their names published on a 11 x17 - awe heck, make it 18 x 24-poster, a sticker and text message from me. instead of airline tickets, i'll take 'em for a ride in my highlander, bella, and put them up in my swanky guest room that has no bed but plush wall to wall carpeting. yeah, man. that'll be awesome.

whew, good thing i already know i'm pretty special. maybe they should change their name to cambridge's who's who in needing attention so badly they'll pay for it. ha!

know your self-worth. be blessed.
